Good news #2

Ever since I got back from England in 2007 I've been dealing with my United Kingdom taxes. I have gotten several nasty mails from Her Majesty's Customs and Revenue Office informing me of my delinquency and fining me a couple of hundred pounds....as in sterling.

I have turned around and sent a couple of nasty-grams to the Ernst&Young people and the IBM people who were supposed to be taking care of all this.

Today I got notified that the tax returns have been completed!

Good News #1 - this is really the good news

Many of you know that my sister, Betty, has been dealing with cancer for 2 years now. Mom just called to say that Betty got back from her checkup today and the cancer is breaking apart and the doctor said she could consider herself cancer free!!!

Betty had a cyberknife procedure several months ago and this checkup was a followup to that. This is the best news....to end 2008 and start 2009.

Get to work from home again this week. Yea! And another short week.

Scheduled for trip to Dallas next week but things may change.

Odds and Ends

Just got in from driving around doing Santa shopping. The Hybrid acts kind of strange in the cold weather. The regenerative braking seems to be deactivated which makes charging the drive battery inconsistent. I'm surprised that the engine actually turns off at times like it does in normal weather (read warm) driving.

After leaving the Ford Escape Hybrid (FEH) in the airport parking ramp for 4 or 5 days, the hybrid system is really messed up. Even got information message that the regen braking was disabled.

Calhoun Square parking ramp has all its new levels. The took the crane away last week. The lights on all the levels are working. The new staircases are still being worked on. There is even going to be an elevator where the one staircase used to be.

It has been super cold here for several weeks. I cannot imagine working outside and around all that cold concrete.

They've torn down more of the old shopping mall. Where Border's used to be is gone. There is now a big gap between the mall and the building at the corner of 31st and Hennepin. It is strange to be able to see the Amazing Thai and Magers & Quinn from my side of Calhoun Square.

On the inside, the eye glass store, Vision World or something like that, has moved into a large space next to GNC across from Famous Dave's.

And one more thing...Al Franken is now 48 votes ahead of Norm Coleman in the still-undeclared Minnesota Senate race. The challenged ballot counting is complete. I'm not sure what is next but there is at least one more case to go to the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Anyone who doesn't think their vote counts, would be wrong on this one.

Home this week

Short week with Christmas on Thursday. Get to stay home and work this week and next.

Hope everyone has a peacefully wonderful Christmas.

Guaranteed white Christmas

We got quite a bit of snow today. Started this morning and just ended around 5pm.

Now it is blowing like crazy. And getting really really cold.

No way this snow and all the other little snows is going to melt by Christmas.

I'll take snow over ice any day

Freezing rain and sleet in Dallas and Irving last night and this morning. What a mess.

I saw at least two accidents on the way to hotel last night. Bridge over flood plain was way icy. This morning traffic was crawling. Three accidents and some really really bad streets.

I think Hertz knows I rented from National last week. I got a little Kia something-or-other... with no ice scraper. The rear and front defrosters work good thank goodness.

Dallas - one last time for '08 ??

This could be my last week in Dallas for 2008. Current plans are not to fly the week of Christmas and the week of New Year's. Things have been known to change though so I'm not holding my breath.

It might not be so bad to be in Dallas this week though. It is supposed to be super cold in Minneapolis starting tomorrow.

And contrary to national news, Minneapolis is not getting big snow. Matter of fact it is in the 30's right now and we are getting a bit of rain. It might snow a little bit this afternoon. But then it is supposed to get cold, cold, cold.

Chevy Malibu

I have been wanting to rent a Chevy Malibu for quite a while. The commercials have worked on me. It is a good looking car.

I rented from National Car Rental because they let you pick your vehicle. Picking can sometimes be a bad thing. Do you go down the whole line of cars to pick one or just grab the closests. If you just take the first one, did you miss a better one?

Anyway, there was a Malibu available.

I was very pleased overall with the Chevy Malibu. It is nice and roomy inside. Chevy has designed the inside trim to match in a wrap-around way. It makes the interior look very clean and professional.

The gages and controls make sense....are easy to read...and easy to use.

Best of all the Chevy Malibu continues my earlier raves of GM transmissions. I do not know how many cylinders this vehicle has but it has adequate power and best of all it does not down shift un-necessarily.

I would recommend this car over the Toyota and Honda in the same class.

Yes, it snowed in Dallas

I flew in on Monday and it was warm and muggy. I think I heard it got up to 70 degrees.

Tuesday morning driving in to work it was 60 degrees. By lunch it was windy and getting cooler. By dinner time it was quite chilly. Sitting down to eat and looking at, the snow was coming down. It flurried pretty good. Didn't stick but everyone was yapping about it.

Margaret Thatcher

I don't know if I have told my saga of trying to get the Margaret Thatcher Suite at the Hilton Anatole where I stay every week in Dallas.

I have asked each clerk when I check in. The general response has been that they don't have the authority to do that.

So last week I emailed a Guest Relations manager at the hotel asking them using the case that I've been staying at the hotel for over a year and wouldn't it just be nice. I was politely told that the Margaret Thatcher Suite was not available for any of the days in the next two weeks that I would be staying but that the Ford Presidential Suite was available the week of Dec. 15. And that as a loyal IBM guest, I could have the suite at 50% off....that being $750.00 per night!

I replied that even at the gracious 50% discount, $750.00/night room charge would most likely not fly on my expense report.

So last night I checked in and got a room on the same floor as the Margaret Thatcher Suite. And not only is it only the same floor, it is the room next to the Margaret Thatcher Suite. I think it is a cruel joke on the hotel's part.

Home - briefly

Got home this evening. Snowing here and fairly cold. It was cold this morning in Dallas but nothing like Minnesota cold.

Going back to Dallas on Monday.

World AIDS Day - December 1

IBM participates and sponsors the World Community Grid. We received this email today from the Minneapolis IBM office:
> I would like to make you aware of a new initiative that is beginning on December 1 - World AIDS Day. Organizations with a particular focus on AIDS treatment and prevention have issued a challenge to encourage us to dedicate our computing run time to the AIDS Research Project, one of the five projects you can support on the World Community Grid. The World Community Grid is entering its fifth year with more than 1.1 million devices having contributed run time. The World AIDS Day Challenge gives us a good opportunity to acknowledge this commitment and encourage more of us to join this unique cause. Our Twin Cities team has joined the challenge - which kicks off December 1 - and I look forward to our team contributing as much time as possible to this worthy effort.

If you would like to participate in the World Community Grid, please click this link.

Moon, Venus and Mars

Did anyone see the moon, Venus and Mars last night? Amazingly beautiful in the western sky around 7pm central time.

I'm going to try to get a picture tomorrow.

Broken record - back to Dallas

Dallas again this week. Don't think anyone is surprised by that.

Be there Monday thru Friday. That is the unusual part.

Supposed to be pretty cold in Minnesota and in the 70's in Dallas. Hmm...may be not too bad.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hope everyone has a peaceful and restful Thanksgiving.

Here are Frankie and Uno demonstrating how to rest.

Ford Escape vs. Toyota RAV4

Special vehicle review. While I was in Virginia I had a 2008 Ford Escape rental. Last week in Dallas I had a Toyota RAV4. Both vehicles I think are considered in the same class.

I think the biggest difference is the Ford feels like it is based on a truck while the Toyota feels more like it is car-based. To be honest and I think everyone knows, I own a Ford Escape. Mine is a 2006 model and hybrid.

My rental Escape was a v6. And it was/is NICE. Very comfortable to drive and ride. Carried 4 adults easily. The interior is different from mine. All the controls are easy to reach and understandable.

I point out the controls in the Escape because in the Toyota RAV4 the button placement didn't really make sense. It took me more than five minutes to find the control to adjust the side mirrors. Of all places it is in the center console between the driver and passenger seats. The radio controls in the Toyota are kind of far away even though the dash bulges in the middle.

The Toyota was a four cylinder and does not compare favorably to the Escape v6. The Toyota downshifts way too much and way too jarringly. It did carry five adult men though to lunch...give it credit for that.

While I am obviously biased toward the Ford Escape, it really is a nicer vehicle. Roomier inside and good looking on the outside.

Newseum - Washington, DC

I haven't had much time to update the blog. Sorry.

Wanted to do a quick review of the Newseum. Mom, Deb, Linda and I went last Saturday. It is rather pricey especially for DC where almost all the museums are free. $20 bucks for admission but you see everything for that.

First all it is located right on Pennsylvania Avenue. Next to the Canadian embassy and across from the Federal Trade Commission and the National Gallery West Wing. The top floor is an outdoor terrace with the most incredible view of the Capitol Building.

There is a working studio. It is where George Stephanopolous does his Sunday talk show. There are interactive displays of news history. All the displays are kept current with news of the election and such. A large control room manned by at least 3 or 4 people keeps all the screens, theaters, projections, etc. running and active.

You can even play newscaster yourself. Deb did one on sports and I did one on weather, of course. I haven't had time to download the video yet. When I do, I'll post on here.

After we were done at the Newseum and as we were leaving, it was pouring down rain. The staff were handing out rain ponchos...so nice...and announced that there was a tornado watch. How did they know? Because they watched the news!

We were blocked from getting back to the car by protestors. Free Tibet protests were going on because of the G-20 economic summit going on up the street at the National Building Museum. So we were wrapped up in news leaving the Newseum.

Crazy rain and quick auto review - Chevy Impala

Rain like all get out yesterday evening. Buckets and buckets of water. It rained so hard the satellite system at Champs went off-line. The drive to Dallas through the driving rain was interesting and leads the auto review.

My first Chevy Impala...and an "SS" which I think means sporty sport. I simply cannot say enough nice things about the GM transmissions. I know I keep going on and on and folks are probably tired of it but what a difference a good transmission makes.

The Impala is a big car by today's standards. A roomy interior. Easy to read gauges. Comfortable.

It handled the driving rain and mini-flooding with great aplomb. It could easily have been scary but the Impala held firm and straight.

It is kind of an odd looking car from the outside but well worth a test drive.

Dallas then Virginia - the state

Back to Dallas on Monday for just two days. I head to Virginia (Mom's) on Wednesday.

Why go to Dallas for just two days? You may ask. That's how bad the project is going.

Going to Virginia for Mom's birthday...which is actually today, Nov. 9. Wish Gracie a happy birthday...slique@webtv.net

My cousin, Deb, and her partner Linda are also going to Virginia. It has been years (decades) since Linda was back East.

Honda Accord

I finally got a Honda Accord rental. I actually didn't think that Hertz had Honda's. In the four years of all this travel and car rental, I've never had a Honda.

My name wasn't on the board where the tell you the car slot when I arrived at the rental center. The clerk at the counter couldn't find my car slot either. He wandered out into the lot and came back to tell me it was in #319.

I walked over to #319 and my name wasn't above the car but the slip inside had my name. The car was rather shabby and dirty inside. I was wondering if this was some employee's car and they decided to let me have it for a few days.

To be honest I wasn't all that impressed with the Accord. It is very roomy inside but overall it is rather plain and boring.

The transmission has a definite torque pull. It was really noticeable when the vehicle shifted while turning. The steering wheel would actually pull. Once again, the GM transmissions are so much better.

I really don't understand why this is such a popular car.

Calhoun Square update

The north of the parking ramp is finished...height-wise and they've moved the crane to the south side.

Construction is progressing quickly on the parking ramp.

While demolition continues on the building itself.

On the south end of Calhoun Square what was Lotus restaurant and Orr Books are gone. The building at 31st and Hennepin is still standing.

Demolition of the northeast corner.

The Indian restaurant, frame store and the little rotissiere restaurant being demolished in this pic.

You can see an old "Calhoun Square" sign that was hidden by the other buildings.

This is the Gerard Avenue/Lake Street corner.

I want to go, too.

Looks like Frankie wants to go to Dallas with Papa.

Be sure to vote tomorrow if you haven't voted already.

I am heading to Dallas after I vote on Tuesday. I actually wasn't thinking I would be traveling at all this week.

Not a cat toy

Frankie and I have been hunting for his favorite toy...a beat-up, old, fuzzy red ball.

So when he dropped something near me while I was working today, I thought he had found it. But it wasn't red. At first I thought it was a poopie. But then I realized it was moving.

Frankie had brought me a baby mouse!

I've had bats before but never a mouse. I'm figuring where there's one, there's more. I have no idea except Uno was down in the basement at the same time. I'm thinking she knows where the mice are.

Nephew back from Iraq

My sister called me yesterday to let me know that my nephew, Ken, was in Wisconsin for de-mobilization and would be flying out of Minneapolis/St. Paul airport today.

I went to the airport this morning expecting to have to have him paged. I also thought I'd stop at the Armed Services lounge. My cell phone rang as I was driving up the airport parking ramp. I fumbled the phone and disconnected the caller.

My phone rang again as I was parking and was able to answer it. It was Ken. He was in the Armed Services lounge.

It was incredibly great to see Ken. I hadn't realized how anxious I was about his being over in Iraq until I got to see him back over here.

Bald sparrow evidence

Here is the evidence.

We had some spitting snow today so if these sparrows migrate, they better get going.

A Halloweeny weekend

Saturday Christine, Kay and I went to the Trail of Terror in Shakopee.

As you can see from the shaky, blurry photo, it was indeed scary.

Actually the hay ride this year was longer but not as scary. Its neat to ride a wagon through the woods at night though.

The haunted house which they now call a maze was fantastic. Scary as all get out and so much fun.

Sunday was pumpkin carving at JT and Linda's. Big crowd of adults and kids and lots of pumpkins and food. A really nice break from working again this weekend.

Home - for a while?

Home again. Supposedly there isn't any more travel money from the client so I might get to be home for a bit.

Woke up in the middle of the night with little Miss Uno curled up next to my chest and Mr. Frankie wedged up to my feet. I was stuck in the middle of them. It was nice.

More about birds

I don't know if they are gackles or grackels or cackles or what. Thousands of birds were roosting in the trees, on top of buildings and in the parking lot at the restaurant we went to last night.

It was so Alfred Hitchcock, The Birds.

A real bald eagle

On the car rental bus shuttle from the Dallas terminal to the car rental system, saw a real bald eagle in the air.

The after picking up my car - a Mazda 3 - and on the way to the client office, saw a large hawk perched on telephone wires.

So, Bunny, I've been seeing a lot of birds lately. Real or fictional - you decide.

Back to Dallas

Dallas again this week.

Saw the "bald-headed" sparrow again today. I tried getting a picture with my phone camera but he was too far away.

Pontiac G6

Or at least I think it was a Pontiac G6.

Not a very comfortable car to drive. Difficult to see out of. The back end is high making it hard to see vehicles behind you. I could not get the steering wheel in a comfortable position and the wheel itself feels too big for the interior. To get it low enough made reading the speedometer impossible.

The transmission shifted smoothly like most of the other GM vehicles I've driven. The window controls are in an odd place on the driver's arm rest. Kept hitting the door lock when I wanted the window.

And I big pet peave of mine...no interior trunk release. You have to use the button on the key fob and I just don't find that convenient.

Follow what I'm announcing...if you can

After you return your Hertz rental car, you take the Hertz shuttle bus back to the airport terminal. Pretty standard.

There are two terminals at Atlanta airport - South and North.

So the announcement on the shuttle goes something like this: We will be arriving at the South Terminal. This bus makes one stop. The South Terminal is for Delta, AirTran, etc, etc. If you have a ticket or boarding pass for these airlines, get off here. Also if you have a boarding pass for any other airline except American or are going to Terminal T or want to walk
but are not handicapped or like to eat dinner before your flight but don't want to get too stuff....you can also get off here....or wait until the North Terminal.

And it just went on and on.

I got off.

Outrageous Fortune

One of my favorite movies is Outrageous Fortune starring Bette Midler and Shelly Long.

While waiting for my flight in Atlanta these two ladies go up to the gate agent and it reminded me of the scene from movie where Shelly Long and Bette Midler go up to the airport ticket counter and pretend to be Russian immigrants.

They put kerchiefs over their heads and speak with Russian accents. The ticket agent calls their bluff but goes ahead and helps them because of their originality.

Anyway I didn't even hear the women at the gate desk but it made me think of that scene and smile.

Reconnected with college roommate

My college roommate, Lewis Jeffries, is from Atlanta. I googled his name and got his phone number.

I had dinner with Lewis and his partner, Paul, last night. It was fantastic to reconnect with someone I knew over 30 years ago.

Atlanta IBM campus

The Atlanta IBM campus is located near the Buckhead area of Atlanta. There are some enormous homes between the IBM office and the hotel. I'm talking ridiculously big.

But there are also lots and lots of trees and beautiful lawns.

The IBM campus is big. There are at least two buildings which are actually connected but because there are so many trees and this is built on a hillside, they seem far apart. The building I'm in straddles a lake.

But like so many of these IBM facilities it is nearly empty. I went up to the 5th floor to look for a soda machine and it is completely empty. No people but the furniture is still there.

Rose and Amy - missed opportunity

My early morning flight on Monday from Minneapolis to Atlanta on Delta was extremely uneventful except for the fact that almost the entire plane was filled with the Army lacrosse team.

Oh, Amy and Rose, you would have loved it! I'll just let everyone use their own imaginations.

Finally a new destination

Atlanta, Georgia

Because of some IRS rule having to do with expense reimbursements I cannot travel to Dallas, Texas for more than 10 days a month now that I've been going there for over one year. The team wants to work together so we chose Atlanta. One team member works there and another lives in South Carolina so less travel overall.

I haven't been to Atlanta since college when the marching band would go to Georgia Tech football games.

Uptown goings on

Gas is down to $2.89.9!! Shot down while I was in Dallas.

The Calhoun Square parking ramp has a new level with another one on the way. They are making pretty good progress.

And today I saw that the demolition of the south section has started. Where Lotus-to-GoGo was is now gone-gone.

Home - chatted all the way

Had a very nice woman as row companion on flight home last night. We chatted the entire time and had so much in common. Made the time fly by...get it?...fly by!

Supposed to be going to Atlanta next week. Same project just meeting in a different city so fewer people have to fly.

Perfect North Texas weather

The last couple of days have been beautiful here in Dallas/Irving. Not that I get outside much because of working but it is most most pleasant.

A sign that this project has been going on too long...I saw my second Neiman Marcus Christmas Catalog release. I actually I missed most of it but the project managers happened upon the outdoor runway show and called me out.

I remember last year it was very very hot.

TSA middle name is Security?

Going through security today in Minneapolis, the TSA x-ray tech pointed and asked if the brown roller-bag was mine. I asked if he meant the grey one?

He told me to remove the bottle of lotion in my bag next time. I said there wasn't any lotion. He just repeated himself.

If there really were lotion, why didn't he have my bag checked manually? Why don't I ever feel like we're really secure?

First Class Upgrade

Another packed flight from Minneapolis to Dallas on American Airlines. I have got to get out of the habit of arriving at the airport just in time for the flight.

I strolled up to the gate ticket checker and was rejected. The other gate attendant recognized me as "Alspaugh" and handed the first class ticket. Sweet!

Dallas

Back again. Some rumors that we might have to go to Dallas every week until the project goes live. And that could be a few more months.

I sure hope we don't have to travel every week.

Twin Cities Marathon

My neighbor, Mather, runs the Twin Cities Marathon so I walk over to Dean Parkway to cheer on him and all the runners.

Thank goodness he saw me cause I would have missed him. There are some 11,000 runners and they come along in huge bunches.

It was raining pretty good while I was watching and even thunder showered. During my walk back home, it poured. By the time I got home I was drenched. But it was all worth it to cheer on Mather and the rest of the runners.

First frost

They predicted frost for this morning. I didn't believe it would really happen. But looking at my bedroom window onto the roof of the porch and there is frost.

I hope my geraniums are okay.

A miniature bald eagle?

At coffee the other morning a sparrow looking for crumbs landed on the sidewalk. He looked like a little bald eagle with his totally white-feathered head.

I didn't get a picture. Bunny doesn't believe me. If I see him at the coffee shop again, I'm going to try to get proof.

Furnace time

Getting rather chilly. Had to turn on the furnace. And bring the house plants in from the front porch.

Can those frosty crystal-coated tree days be far away?

Pelican on Lake Calhoun

Finally got a jog in this evening. Making my way around Lake Calhoun and see a lone pelican on Lake Calhoun.

The pelican is all white and of medium size. I've never seen a pelican on Lake Calhoun.

Spring Green, Wisconsin

Another fun road trip to Spring Green, Wisconsin. Got back later than usual yesterday, Sunday.

We stopped at Cranberry Fest in Warrens, Wisconsin. It was cran-tastic! Kind of hard to find any cranberry-based things. I have never seen so many vendor booths. The whole town is covered in booths of all different things. Just goes to show that people will buy anything.

The show this year at American Players Theatre was The Belle's Strategem. A comedy some 200 years old. Very funny. Very well done. Beautiful costumes.

The fire pit at the hotel was quite popular. In past years we've had to remind the motel to set it up. No longer. They now advertise the fire pit. Locals were actually coming to have a drink and set out by the fire.

This is definitely a trip I look forward to every year. Many many thanks to Rose for organizing the trip.

Heading home - but just for a minute

Heading home from Dallas on Friday morning. Only home long enough to exchange suitcases, give the cats their treats and clean out the litter box.

This is the annual American Players Theatre, Spring Green, Wisconsin road trip. We'll see the matinee on Saturday and head back to Minneapolis on Sunday.

Traveling this week

Back to Dallas on Monday.

I messed up my friends going to Spring Green, Wisconsin this Friday. On Tuesday last week when I checked for flights to Dallas (Mon - Thurs) the airfare was over $1,000.00. I told the project manager that I needed to come back on Thursday because Friday was a vacation day for me. I figured I would check later in the week to see if prices had gone down as they often do.

So I checked on Thursday and the same flights were now priced a little under $900.00. Then forgetting about my Friday plans I checked for early departure times. Flight leaving Minneapolis at 6am and returning Friday at 7am was priced at $384.00! Still forgetting about Friday plans to go to Spring Green, Wisconsin, I booked it.

My apologies to my friends. It is my fault we are leaving at 10:300/11:00am instead of 9:30am. Enjoy the extra hour and sleep in.

Squirrels 21; Jeffery 1

The squirrels won. They took the last apple.

I saved one that they dropped on the ground and didn't eat. I had part of one that they left behind and only ate small part.

Gonna have to come up with different strategy next year.

Some kind of record

I'm home again this week! This is some kind of record for not traveling -- 3 weeks in a row.

I've been expecting an email or another phone call from American Airlines. They have actually called me in the past when I haven't traveled for a few weeks asking me what's going on. I did get an email today asking if I wanted to try to go for Executive Platinum. That means 100,000+ miles of travel but there is no way I'm going to make that by the end of the year.

I'm appreciating my long stretch of no travel though.

Oktoberfest - Old Chicago

The gang at Old Chicago for the first night of the Oktoberfest mini-tour.

There was free food and a three-piece polka band. Bunny and Rose knew a bunch of polka songs so the band loved us.

From Tic, Tac polka to polka and Apple, Peaches, Pumpkin and There's No Beer in Heaven polka to Ace is the Hardware Place (my own polka), it was fun fun fun.

"Classic!" -- twice

I went to Dunn Bros to get a coffee and take a mental break from work. Somehow I won a free beverage. As I'm walking down the street with my coffee, I realize my coffee cup has a leak. Classic!

Remember my comments about the copper tubing they used to wire the new trees along Lake Street. Well, he copper tubing is still there - renews my faith in man kind -- however, the cut down one of the trees! -- Classic!

The tree never did grow (dead) so was it stupid to wire the tree or stupid to cut it down? Now the copper tubing is tumbled on the ground.

Republican National Convention (RNC) - Gitmo

No, I didn't attend the RNC. I did finally go over to St. Paul to see Amnesty International's display of a Guantanamo (Gitmo) terrorist cell. They had the display in Denver at the Democrats' convention, too.

I was expecting to be outraged by some awful, cramped and dirty box. I wasn't. It wasn't dirty. It was small but not cramped. It was a Minnesota evening and not a hot and humid day in Cuba so that probably was not how it would really feel.

At the risk of offending at least half of the people who may read this (and I don't generally get political - at least not on my blog), I was reminded of the cell and its seclusion when the next night I listened to Senator McCain recount his story of being a prisoner of war. He talked about how much he loved his country due to his experience as a POW. I wonder if the men being held in gitmo feel the same way about their country.

Hate the squirrels

No matter how funny the squirrel was at my neighbor's walking up the ladder, I still hate them.

Of my four lonely apples left, they stole one of them. I'm down to three apples on my new tree.

Hate 'em!

Pedestrian's rights

I've commented a few times how much I like my neighborhood and walking to stores, restaurants and just walking. But it is getting more and more treacherous to do so.

If it isn't a driver completely ignoring me crossing the street while they are turning right into me. Or a bicyclist riding down the sidewalk when there are very clear signs not to. Or drivers and bicyclist who ignore stop signs...it is defensive walking all the time now.

Home this week - lack of blog entries

I'm home again this week. I really thought I'd be asked to go to Dallas....but I didn't.

The project continues to be a rough one. I ended up working quite a bit this weekend. And because of all the work I don't much feel like doing other computer stuff like creating blog entries.

I'll try to caught up on here this week.

Minnesota State Fair

I made it to the State Fair this year. It has been awhile since I've gone.

Christine, Kay and I drove to a park and ride in St. Paul. We got to the Fair around 3:30 I think. First stop was the dairy building to see the Princesses butter heads. There was one in progress. First food - a black berry sundae....yum.

I'm not going to remember everything. The weather was beautiful. Here's the food list:
black berry sundae
chocolate covered Belgium waffle on a stick
elk meatballs with mashed potatoes (very very good) with a beer
kettle corn (very fresh and oh so good)
fresh roasted corn on the cob (double yum)
chocolate covered bacon (actually very good)
beer

Here we are after the second beer:

Quick location update

I'm home this week. Short week because of Labor Day holiday. And I'm kind of restricted in travel to Dallas, Texas because of some IRS rules concerning working in one location that isn't your normal tax jurisdiction for more than a year.

Huyndai Elantra

This week's car felt kind of like my very first car back in 1985, a Ford Escort. There is plenty of room and if you slam the gas pedal to the floor, you can get going.

There were a couple of odd things with this particular car. About every other time I started up, the radio didn't work. I turned off the engine and restarted and voila, the radio worked again.

The other thing was if I forgot to put the car in park before turning it off, I couldn't then put it in park. And if it isn't in park, you can't take the key out. So you have to turn it back on, put it in park, then take turn it off and take the key out.

It was hot and humid as all get out this week. Definitely had to have the A/C on full blast most of the time to keep up. They should provide those windshield sun blocker things in Dallas.

My location

Back to Dallas on Monday. Staying through Thursday evening.

The Republican National Convention is in St. Paul next week. I'm expecting the airport to be crowded on Thursday.

Watching the Olympics closing ceremony and they are doing a shot of Michael Phelps in London. And guess where he is? Trafalgar Square. Ahhh, the memories.

An expensive cup of coffee - part 3

Turns out (pun intended) that the left turn at Isles Parkway is now becoming historic.

Here is copy of email from Marlin:

Just a warning to those of you who may be dropping off children at BC and
driving in to US via Lake of the Isles this week - the police are increasing
enforcement, sitting on Euclid just off of Lake of the Isles Pkwy waiting to
cite illegal
right-turners. You may have done it a hundred times before, but this week it
just might cost you $125 - it did for me - Beware!

What are they thinking

Part of the Lake Street reconstruction includes planting new trees and putting in new lighting. This week they added the wiring of the new trees for lighting.

So guess what they used to "snake" the wire up the tree trunk to the junction box attached to the tree? Copper tubing. It looks quite lovely and they wound the copper tubing decoratively around the tree.

What has been recently in the news? Copper being stolen from construction sites or even existing homes and buildings. Someone even cut the power cord from an appliance I left for the garbage to pickup.

How long do you think those copper tubes with their copper wires inside will last?

Road construction and utility work - duh!

What is it with road construction and utility work not being co-ordinated???

There has been a complete tear down to dirt including curbs, lighting, plantings, road service, signage, etc. of Lake Street for the last almost two years. They finally resurfaced one side of the street late last year and they just finished the other side this summer. And now the digging big holes in the new road surface to work on utilities!!

Granted the road needs one last asphalt layer I guess but why didn't they do the utility work when the street was down to dirt?! And they are having to close lanes again while the new road is dug up!

Home this week

I forget that people actually do read this blog to find out where I am.

No travel this week. Frankie is driving me crazy. He's wandering around the house whining. I don't know what his deal is.

backyard hummingbird

I think it is a first. There is a hummingbird in my backyard enjoying the tower gerarnium I bought a few weeks ago.

I don't recall ever seeing a hummingbird in my backyard before. Very neat.

Amy going homeless?

I'll let you make your own caption.

A sweet ride - Ford Mustang

I think for the first time I exchanged cars. I got to my assigned car, a Kia. I opened the door and tossed in my backpack. As I leaned in the car I noticed it kind of smelled funny. I got in and it definitely smelled bad.

I went to the desk and asked for a different car. I happened to get a Ford Mustang. I've had the Mustang before. A few years ago when I got my first one I thought the ride was too stiff and way too hard.

This one only had 1500 miles on it so was brand new. They have improved the ride comfort tremendously. I really like driving this car. If you ever get a chance to drive this version of the Ford Mustang, I highly recommend it.

But I did something I rarely do. I took a picture of the car. This Mustang was a gorgeous shade of cobalt blue. It was/is a sweet ride.

Typical Texas road signage

The road from the client site to where all the restaurants are is under construction. Actually just the part that goes over another highway. It has dropped quite a bit and there were some amazing bumps getting on and off the over pass.

Well they are finally fixing it so the road is closed and there is a sign and cones. The cones guide you into the right lane. The construction sign says to turn right and follow the detour signs.

Well, there aren't anymore signs. That's it. Follow what detour signs?? Nope, you're on your own. Good luck. Buh-bye.

Avon calling

As I entered my hotel to check-in last night, I see this large and loud group of women in the elevator lobby.

After I check-in, I head back to the elevator lobby which is still full and with a long line of women. Turns out there is an Avon quarterly convention going on. A couple of elevators arrive and quickly fill up.

Another door opens and women pile in. I just want to get to my room so I can change and go to the gym. It has been an extremely long day.

The next elevator opens near me. A few women get on and I right behind them. I announce "man on board" but no one seems to notice. The doors close and someone shouts "MAN ON BOARD!" I quickly let them know that I use Avon products. --- Thanks to Aunt Donna! I was left unharmed.

And for any guys who might be reading this...there are some HOT Avon ladies.

Back to Dallas

Leaving tomorrow, Tuesday, for another trip to Dallas. Back on Friday in time to go to gala opening of the season at The Guthrie with the opening of the world premiere of "A Little House on the Prairie - the Musical."

We're supposed to get some much needed-rain tonight. I sure hope it happens. Dallas is forecast to be a cool mid-90's this week!

An expensive cup of coffee - part 2

I decided to try to battle the violation for turning left before 9am.

I went to the "Violations and something or other" office in downtown Minneapolis Friday morning. I had planned on getting down there early in the day but because of meetings and problems with work, I didn't make it until almost 12:30.

The waiting room was pretty full. The count down counter was at 15. I asked for the next number which was 44!

After about 15-20 minutes they started calling out numbers and it looked like it was going pretty fast. Most people were only in the inner offices for a few minutes. I really had no idea where or what was happening on the other side of the door.

When the number got to 42, it stayed there for quite a while, of course. Finally my number was called. I was prepared to argue my case as an extreme violation given that it occurred at 8:50am - only 10 mins under the wire.

The gentleman who called my name was in jeans and short-sleeved shirt. I figured I would be taken to a hearing room or such. Nope. Went to his little office with a desk, his chair and one other chair.

Before I could even say anything he said, "so you want to get this off your record?" I said I did. He said, "okay, but you have to pay the fine of $125.00." I said yes and then asked if I could get the fine reduced.

"No," he said, "it is one or the other. Off your record or reduced fine."

I agreed to the off the record option and signed the release. I have to have a clean record for a year for it really to be off. What it really means is the prosecution is suspended for a year. I paid the fine at another window.

On closer reading of the form, I noticed that the fine is actually also removed and becomes a prosecution fee which goes directly to the precinct that issued the violation. That just reeks of quota system. The violation dollars don't go toward a general police or road or safety fund but to the precinct. Obviously there is an incentive for each precinct to maximize their violations and if there is budget to be considered, then a quota has to be involved.

Decided to work late but at least sit outside on a beautiful evening here. And here is the lovely view from my picnic table. The picture doesn't really do justice to the colors.

Some more catching up - sunrise

I've tried to doctor this photo and it doesn't really do the sunrise justice....but here is the sunrise from the 25th floor of the Hotel Anatole last week in Dallas.

Some more catching up - Kathy and the zoo

I took the noon flight home on Thursday so I could go to the Minnesota Zoo with my friend and previous co-worked, Kathy Just. Her electric co-operative sponsors a free evening at the zoo.

Here we are in the very bright sun light.

Kathy has a really nice digital camera. Here are some of her pictures.

This beautiful gibbon and her partner who is black were both very animated.

Some catching up...Michele in town

Friend and previous co-worker, Michele Charron, was in town last week. She stopped by and we went to Stellas. Stellas has a great roof top bar. It was crowded as all get out. The view of downtown Minneapolis is spectacular.

Mazda 3

I've been wanting a Mazda 3 rental for quite a while. I always really enjoyed the Mazdas I have owned or my Mom's.

The Mazda 3 is definitely fun to drive. It is nimble and quick. The interior seems a bit dated. The gauges are set deep into the dash.

Speaking of the gauges in daytime they have white faces with black lettering. At night the have blue faces with red lettering and red lights. The gauges are easier to read at night than day.

Those little boxes of cereal

Could they make something more difficult to open than those little boxes of cereal. That's what the hotels mostly serve and I have the hardest time trying to get the darn things open.

First it is the box itself. I think these boxes could be the safest place to keep your valuables if you had the technology to make them yourself. I usually end up punching a hole in the box with the end of my spoon.

Once I've mangled the box, there's the plastic bag inside. Again the glue is something from NASA. I have only luckily avoided exploding the whole thing all over the room as I attempt to pull, twist, rip, tear, bite the thing open. A co-worker suffered the embarrassment of the exploding bag not once but twice. Raisin bran sprayed all over the place.

Of course, that was funny as all get out because it didn't happen to me.

When 84 degrees is cool

It was 84 degrees this morning at 7:00AM. It was 105 degrees Monday evening when I left the client office to go to hotel. Twenty degree difference made it feel like 84 was balmy.

It hasn't really been humid except in the morning and don't spend any time outside so all in all the heat isn't a factor. I guess it has there have been 11 out of the last 12 days over 100.

Today only supposed to get to 98. Practically a cool front!

100 and something degress -- yeah -- NOT

Back to Dallas on Monday. Staying through Thursday noon. It is supposed to be over 100 degrees every day this week in Dallas!

I guess that isn't unusual but I am not looking forward to it.

An expensive cup of coffee

I had a dentist appointment this morning at 8am. I went to the dentist office and had my teeth cleaned.

On my way home I decided to stop at my favorite coffee spot, Isles Bun & Coffee. I traveled the usual way by turning left onto Isle Parkway off of Lake Street. Guess that isn't allowed between 7 and 9am. I didn't know and I've driven that for years.

Well, I made the turn at 8:50am. A cop was there with two other cars pulled over. I joined the line of cars receiving their "moving violation."

The violation amount? $125.00!! Cup of coffee. $2.00. Total: $127.00 for a cup of coffee!!!

Funny squirrel story

It is mostly funny because it didn't happen to me.

A little back story... my neighbor, Sunil, came over yesterday for an impromptu cookout in my backyard. He is having his chimney repaired and in the process discovered that another squirrel has gotten into his attic or eaves. He's had this problem several times and the squirrels get there by eating through the wood along the eaves.

He had been searching for his trap....like I said he's had this problem several times. He couldn't find it but is pretty sure where they are getting into his house.

The chimney repair man has left the ladder on the house for over a week. I was concerned during our big winds that it would come down but it hasn't.

This evening I was getting ready to go out to go to the gym. I was getting the cats off the back porch and what do I see but the squirrel climbing up the ladder to the roof. And Sunil is coming around the corner of his house and sees it too. I laughed and laughed. Sunil could not believe his eyes. It was so funny.

The squirrel makes it all the way up the ladder. And it isn't like he's climbing up the sides or some weird way. No. He's climbing up rung by rung. He gets to the top and lazily stretches out on the roof. I was half expecting him to pull out a beach towel and lotion. The squirrel was as relaxed as could be.

So funny...especially since it isn't my house.

Home and working from home

I'm in Minneapolis again this week. And this week I'm working from home.

The team in Minneapolis

One of the best self-portraits I think. Here is me and my team (Mindy, me, Fleur) on the Stone Arch bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

A regular commuter

Riding the bus to and from IBM office is working great. It is expensive to work downtown though. Buying lunch and snacks. It is all way too convenient to wander through the skyway for something to eat or drink.

It has been pretty warm and way muggy. I've saved a lot of electricity by not working from home but I miss the ease of being home.

A change of pace

No travel this week but not working from home. My two team members have flown to Minneapolis so we can work together this week. So we're working in the IBM office in downtown Minneapolis.

I'll be riding the bus to and fro. I purchased a "Go To" card at the Metro Transit office. It works like the Oyster card in London. It holds money and you just have to press it on the reader in the bus or the lightrail. Oh, so convenient.

Waiting for delayed flight. The view of Mt. Ranier was phenomenal. This picture doesn't do it justice.

Different location

In Seattle, Washington this week! It is so beautiful here. Bright, sunny and warm.

Had a series of problems this morning and was beginning to think I wouldn't or shouldn't be flying.

First my dishwasher (dishdrawer as many of you know) did not complete its cycle correctly. There was still water in it and the drawer wouldn't open properly. Also, it wouldn't turn on. There was some water in below so it kind of indicated that the overflow had tripped and shut it down. That is a safety feature so it doesn't flood the house.

That wasn't it. My drain was completely clogged up with gunk so the water wasn't able to be pumped out and drained. The dishdrawer then somehow tripped the GFI outlet so it wasn't getting any power.

I cleaned out all the drain pipe pieces and reset the GFI outlet. And all was well. But this was my morning to get ready to fly out of town. Thank goodness I had gotten up early and the flight wasn't until 9am.

The next incident was on the way to the airport. For those of you in Twin Cities you know there is all this construction on 35W and so no shoulders in the case of an emergency. Well...

...as I'm getting ready to left exit from 35W to Highway 62, the "Service Soon" message displays on the dash and the wrench idiot light comes on. And worst of all, the darn thing slows to under 40 mph and won't go any faster. The engine won't rev and that's just that.

I turn on the flashers and start looking for some place to pull over. There are barricades everywhere and merging traffic and a long line of cars behind me. I finally get to a spot where I could pull over. My only hope was to shut the truck off and restart it and pray that it would "fix" itself.

It did.

I went on to the airport without any further problems. I'm hoping when I get back Friday night that I can make it home okay.

Guess I need to take the thing into the shop. Thank goodness for the Yahoo Ford Escape Hybrid (FEH) user group. Someone posted a similar issue and how they got their '07 fixed.

Home again

Went for my traditional last morning snorkel on Saturday. Decided I would try to see if the giant eel was in its lair. But it wasn't.

Did see an octopus though. So fascinating. It was tucked into the side of the "wall" doing a pretty good job of blending in but not enough.

Got checked out of hotel and off to airport without any hitches. Had a long layover in Dallas so had dinner and made some phone calls.

After we took off, the pilot told us we had the rate opportunity of a second sunset. As were were taxing to the runway, the sun set in Dallas. Because we were traveling north, the sun came back up just above the horizon and stayed there for quite a while as we flew due north. It finally set for the second time about half hour or more into the flight.

I did not drown

Had my first scuba experience yesterday. Carlos at Pepe's Scuba here at Coral Princess hotel was my instructor.

He explained all the equipment. How to use the respirator and how to retrieve it when you're underwater if you lose it. Most importantly for me was how to clear water from your goggles underwater.

We did a brief go through in the swimming pool then went right into the ocean off the hotel. The water is about 20 feet deep. I had some problems getting the buoyancy vest to deflate enough to let me sink. I'm not naturally very buoyant so thought it was kind of funny.

We swam along with the current. Carlos showed me the "home" for a big squid. The squid was in there all curled up. He also showed me the biggest green eel I had ever seen. It must have been at least 4 feet long and a good 10 or 12 inches tall. It was enormous. I had snorkeled around the spot several times and had not seen it.

The experience was good. Especially since I didn't drown or have any real problems. I'm not sure if I would do it again though.

(No Subject)

Pretty much not doing anything.

Sleeping (sun bathing...thank goodness for spray on sun guard to reach everywhere).

Reading (Jimmy Carter auto-biography of his boyhood in Plains, Georgia).

Snorkeling (only occasionally and only here at the hotel).

I did go into town last night to eat at favorite restaurant, Casa Denis, just off the Plaza Mayor.

Today I'm actually going to do a planned activity. Taking an introduction to scuba course. If you don't hear from me, I've succumbed to the bends or some other tragic outcome.

Cozumel, Mexico

Finally a non-business trip. Flew from Minneapolis to Miami. Then Miami to Cozumel in a prop-jet. I thought you couldn't fly directly from the United States to Cuba but I guess you can. There was an American Eagle flight from Miami to Havana right before my flight.

Got here safe and sound. The flight to Cozumel was not full and took a little over an hour. They didn't have the custom's forms on the plane so had to fill out in the airport. Got through passport control and the very short custom's declaration line where you press a button. If the light turns red, you have to have your bags searched. It the light turns green, you get to go on through.

Paid my taxi fare at the airport window...$8 US or 78 pesos. Turns out I had quite a lot of pesos left over from my last trip so using them. The exchange rate this month is almost exactly 10 to 1. 10 pesos to one dollar. Makes easy for calculating in my head.

First thing you have to do when you get here is not worry about time. I didn't even bring my watch. Even though I was the first in the transport, the drivers want to fill up the van to make it worth it. My hotel is on the north side and not as many people stay on this side. It took a while to get more passengers so I just sat and read my book.

I was the first to be dropped off at my hotel which is not far from the airport. I dumped my stuff in the room; put on my swimming suit; went down to the beach and jumped in the ocean. The beach at my hotel is all man made because we actually are sitting on the coral. The water off the pier is pretty deep...probably 15 feet or more but crystal clear and full of fish. The corals were pretty damaged up by Hurricane Wilma a few years ago. The hotel itself was nearly destroyed.

The corals are coming back and soon will be quite spectacular.

Towel art.

The famous sunsets...

Quick trip to EcoEternity

My Mom sent out an invitation to join her on a trip to Camp Highroad near Middleburg, Virginia. Camp Highroad is a Methodist summer camp that has recently started burials in their forest. I decided I would fly out for the day to join her, my brother Loyd and my sister Carol.

Click here to read about EcoEternity

I got up at 4am on Tuesday to catch a 6am flight to Chicago. About a two hour layover then the regional jet from Chicago to DC Reagan National. Picked up my rental car and called Loyd. Mom was driving out in her rental car to meet Loyd in Warrenton. Carol was driving herself directly to Camp Highroad.

I made it to Warrenton and thought I had a little time so headed to Frost Diner for lunch. Loyd called asking me where I was. Mom had already arrived. My flying out to go was a surprise for Mom. I hadn't made it inside Frost Diner and headed over to the Rankin Hardware Store where Loyd was and met Mom in the Tadpole Restaurant. She was surprised.

We stopped in the hardware store to use the restroom. Mom really was impressed by this grill.

We took my rental car to Camp Highroad.

Carol was waiting for us. She had gotten there early and had looked around the camp part.

Rick Dawson, the Director, met us and we took the "mule" into the forest. The mule is a motorized carrier with just enough room for the five of us. I was glad we took the mule. It was muddy as Virginia has gotten a lot of rain during this Spring.

There are trees with red or green ribbon around them. Those are the trees you can "lease" for burial of your ashes. We walked around and Mom checked out which tree she wanted. She decided on #218. It is on a Popular, straight and tall, on a rise with a beautiful view.

I think this burial idea is great. The Camp Highroad site is beautiful and quiet. I was so glad I flew out for this event.

We drove to Middleburg from the Camp. Such an incredibly beautiful area with horse farms, forests, pastures, dry rock fences and views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Carol went home from Middleburg. Mom wanted to go the "back way" back to Warrenton so Loyd drove. We head out of Middleburg towards The Plains.

For the rest of this story you have to know that my Mom drove a school bus before I was in school and while I was in elementary school. So while we're heading out of Middleburg Mom comments that she thinks she had a school bus route out here. And she says, "I think I got lost around here."

Loyd asks, "What about the kids? What did you do with them?"

Mom says, "Oh, I never did find them."

Oh, my gosh. I laughed so hard there were tears streaming down my face. It still makes me laugh just writing it and remembering.

I came home on Wednesday. Woke up at 3am my time (4am eastern) to catch a 6:50am flight out of Reagan National. I got back to Minneapolis around 11:00am. A great trip.

The story of a tree

The before. Notice how much of the one side is dead or dying.Another angle of the "before." There is actually a large broken limb lodged in the center.

Most of the green side is gone.

Thar she goes...heads!

Look...no limbs....
Just the big pieces left.

Here's the trunk. The left part of the closest piece is just spongy. And so is the top part of the piece behind.

The backyard after. The bareness is so dramatic.

Home this week

I'm working from home this week. My big old maple tree in the backyard is being taken down tomorrow. Unfortunately it just isn't making it. There is a large canker sore that has killed most of one side and root rot diagnosed, too.

The tree service is supposed to be coming at 8am on Monday. The power line to the house has to be taken down.

I'll miss the wonderful shade both to the backyard and to the house.

Canoeing the St. Croix River

Many thanks to Ace (Stace) for organizing another St. Croix River canoe trip. It was a beautiful day!

The river was much higher than last year. We didn't have to get out and pull the canoes over the rocks once. It was also flowing at a quick pace which made for a fast trip.

Saw a bald eagle soaring above right as we first got in the river. A good sign. Saw turtles sunbathing and even on the sandbar where we stopped for lunch were left over turtle eggs -- even though a certain member of the party thought they were marshmallows. Looked like a good year for baby turtles.

More peonies

Spectacular blossoms this year. The peonies along the garage are fantastic. Along with the three red big ones, the white and pink ones at the end of this row are also full of blooms. The color is not true in this picture but you can see how many flowers each bush has.

There are also a white one (much different from Miss America) and another red one along the fence in the flower garden.

Hyundai Elantra

At least I think it was an Elantra. It is very plain "look-like-the-rest" kind of car. Ran well except the air conditioner couldn't keep up with the Texas heat.

Not much else to say about it.

Bachman Lake

In Dallas and staying at a different hotel this week. It is right across from Love Field (airport). Close by is Bachman Lake so I decided to go for a jog. Yes, I actually am jogging.

Saw several different kinds of ducks. Some pretty big ones that kind of looked like turkeys. There were all white ones and a few mallards, too.

The lake water doesn't look very pleasant. There are open drains from the parking lots and streets that go directly into the lake.

It was very very hot so I took my shirt off. People I would approach were kind of staring. I vainly thought that were impressed by my slim athletic physique. It wasn't until I got back to the hotel and saw my reflection in the glass door that I think I know why they were staring. I am as pale as a sheet of paper! I looked like a bald ghost or something.

South Africa

My friend Christine is in South Africa for six weeks supposedly studying law. I had seriously considered going to visit. The logistics got to be too complicated and were stressing me out so I am not going.

Follow her trials and tribulations at Gladys Christine in South Africa

Return to Dallas

Here I am. Back in Dallas again. Was'nt really expecting to be here again this month. It probably goes without saying but it was HOT yesterday and today looked like it was going to be another scorcher.

It rained a little bit and actually cooled things down instead of making it stickier, thank goodness.

I'm hoping the heat stays away for the rest of the week I'm here.

Different story...
I like going to the grocery store for lunch sometimes. Grazing through the salad bar seems healthier than fast food joints. I got some cottage cheese and peach slices (canned) to go on top.

Took them to the check out and the cashier (a young girl) asked me if that was cottage cheese. I said yes and she asked me if it was any good. What??!!

I asked, "You've never had cottage cheese?" "No," she said. I thought that was kind of amazing.

Sign of the times

This may be old news for most but this was the highest gas price I'd seen at the time. The price at this station actually has gone down to $3.97.

I've also seen $4.09 at a station just a few miles away.

Miss America

Thanks to some wonderful friends several years ago, I am the proud owner of a Miss America peonia. This year she is fantastic bloom.

No travel this week but short-lived

I'm home this week and was thinking I'd be home for a bit. But NO. Told today to head back to Dallas next week.

I got a refundable airplane ticket just in case things change.

Buick Torrent

Almost forgot to do my auto review.

Never heard of a Buick Torrent. It is a cross-over utility vehicle, CUV, that appears to be based on a truck chassis.

It isn't as bad looking as the Aztec which I'm sure is a cousin. It is very comfortable inside except for the driver window. The ledge - I guess that's what you call it - where the glass goes into the door is high. It is actually kind of difficult to reach out to get parking lot tickets and such. And forget putting your elbow up.

It bears repeating again...the transmission is excellent. Since the Torrent is a GM, this one follows the trend of it's siblings.

Friendly faces

Didn't United at some point have a fly the friendly skies advertising campaign?

Seeing a friendly face and having the person remember you is something that makes my business travel so much more tolerable. On my flight Monday from Minneapolis to Dallas was Rachel (pronounced Ra-shell), who also goes by Shelly. We spent a lovely 10 hours on a plane in Chicago probably 3 years ago now.

I don't see her often even though she is based in Minneapolis. But everytime she sees me there is a wonderful smile on her face and we chat about what's been going on in our travel lives.

And at the hotel I stay at in Dallas, the Hilton Anatole, the parking attendant is the nicest person. She remembers my name and always has a nice word to say. Also, the attendant and trainer at the gym has gotten so used to seeing me, he recognized me at a restaurant up in Irving when I was out to lunch.

Those little things that take the impersonal out of business travel.

Back to the Big D

Heading to Dallas today. Should be there until Thursday. Just checked the weather...mid 90's! That'll be a change from up here in Minnesota.

Uptown and severe weather

I was walking around my neighborhood doing errands and such and was thinking how much a enjoy living in Uptown.

On my way to my favorite coffee shop I ran into Rose sitting outside another coffee shop and we chatted for a bit about the beer festival that was being setup in the street.

The folks at my coffee shop all know me and were shocked when I ordered a different coffee from my usual.

From the coffee shop I headed to my bank. And then to the grocery store. Looking at the various yard gardens people have been working on.

About an hour later I walked up to my training gym and had a great workout. Got home took a shower and Rose stopped by after her baking class at Kitchen Window in Calhoun Square (in Uptown, of course).

Later in the day we had some incredible weather. The weather sirens went off in Uptown but the sun was shining. Turned on the tv and this bad storm was headed my way.

All the sudden it started hailing. A little bigger than pea size hail but lots and lots of it. There wasn't any lightening or thunder. Then it started to rain pretty heavy. It stopped and the sun came out again. Then the hail started again and the sun was still shining bright.

Rose and I were supposed to meet Amy and Bunny at Amy's house. We postponed until the storm was over. Driving to Amy's in St. Louis Park there was so much hail piled up that it looked like a snowstorm had come through.

And there were lots of trees down. A couple of blocks from Amy's, a tree had fallen on a house and there was more hail than I had ever seen.

Home this week

As you've probably figured out I am working from home this week. The project has early morning meetings every day so I am up early and end up working to around 6pm. Hardly seems like a holiday week.

I often go to the Dunn Bros. coffee shop at Bryant and Lake in the afternoon. Just a chance to see that there are other people around and to avoid the urge to go upstairs and lie down. Only made it once this week. The famous writer and storyteller, Kevin Kling, was there.

I have gotten some home project work done. Primed the front porch where the white paint was peeling. Got the porch windows out and the screens in. Finally replaced the hinges on the back porch door. That door wasn't closing and had been driving me crazy.

Franky loves going out on his harness and leash.

Kayaking on Lake Calhoun

Thanks to Jenny Batten for inviting me to go kayaking on Lake Calhoun on Saturday. It was a beautiful day. We saw baby ducks and geese. We also saw several different turtles sun bathing around the islands of Lake of the Isles.

It was great catching up with Jenny and Andrew's life.

No pictures unfortunately but given my kayaking history it was best not to carry anything that wasn't waterproof. I didn't tip over by the way.

Hyundai Elantra

I have to say right off the bat that I did not like this car. First, the color. It was a silver-blue-steel sort of color which just didn't look right. The style is kind of 80's - and not good-retro.

The inside is plain jane though it was comfortable and good peppiness. There was a really bad rattle when you came to a stop. The engine idle got the tailpipe to vibrate, I think, and tat-tat-tat-tat from the rear.

I only had the car for a day and that was long enough for me. Matter of fact, when I turned it back in on Thursday morning, the Hertz checker said, "You only drove two miles?!" Their odometer checker was either wrong from the previous driver or wrong for me. I (IBM) still got charged $7 for gas/wear-and-tear.

Dallas again

Heading to Dallas for a few days. A rare mid-week trip.

Cool first part of this week but supposed to be in the 80's (finally) by this weekend.

The MN AIDS Walk was last Sunday. It was a beautiful day. Many thanks to Rose Block for organizing an enthusiastic Guthrie Team.

sick as a dog

Yesterday, Monday, I was very out of it. My diarrhea was back and I felt awful. By the end of the day the only I thing I could think of as the cause were the malaria pills I've been taking. I checked the side effects and sure enough gastro-intestinal problems including diarrhea are the major side effects.

Don't know why I'm getting this now unless that is what my problem was when I first got to India. I'm supposed to take for another few days but don't think I will. There were mosquitoes around the hotel because of the nearby marsh.

We'll see how it goes today.

Back in the USA

Made it back on time Saturday morning. Doing well. Dozed off some yesterday afternoon.

Frankie and Uno are great. Frankie has been keeping close. Many thanks to neighbors Roxi and Mather for cat care.

Gotta get back to normal operations...making my own meals and doing my own laundry.

A three hour tour

Friday, May 9

Rented a car, and a driver, for a four hour tour of the city. I wanted to hit specific sites so I had my guide book and list. Finally a chance to see the sites.

First stop was to be the big lake in the middle of the city with the large statue of Buddha on an island in the middle. But my driver had slightly other plans as we stopped at a "very good shop" for me to check out. Turned out to be all right. I bought some presents to bring back.

We did make it to the lake called Hussein Sagar. The drive around is 12 kilometers. There are a few parks at various points and a water park and an amusement park.

Next stop the Birla Mandir temple. A fantastic site. The temple is a collection of buildings with different shrines for different gods. There are thousands of Hindu gods it turns out. Everything is made of white marble.

It was noon when we arrived and hot as all get out...well over 100 degrees. You cannot where shoes anywhere on the grounds. Thank goodness you can wear socks. Those who had bare feet were hopping and skipping to get from grass runner to next.

There are carvings of various gods and their activities throughout. No photography is allowed. It is quite beautiful. The site is on the highest point in Hyderabad. You can see everything from here. We could make out Charminar and Golconda Fort way in the distance.

Who is that pale bald guy? So much for no photography.

From the temple we went to the Legislative Assembly. Luis and I had been driven by here on the way to Charminar last weekend. I wanted to see the Mahatmi Ghandi statue up close. The driver pulled in front and I jumped out for these pictures.

I wanted to see the Qutb Shahi Tombs which are near Golconda Fort. For some reason I thought there was only one tomb building but there are seven plus several other structures. This site contains large (very large) tomb buildings for the dynasty that built what has become
Hyderabad. It is only a kilometer from Golconda Fort. It is an amazing collection of buildings but they are not too well maintained.

My "tour guide" charged me an exorbitant amount. My fault for not asking before he started his routine. As Bunny so wisely told me, "they need it more than I do."

I was way sweaty and hungry by this time so I had the driver take me back to the hotel. I wasn't out the entire 4 hours but it was long enough and I saw what I wanted to see.

I head back home to night. I leave around 9pm local time which is 7:30am Friday back home. I land in Minneapolis at 10:45am Saturday.
