No surprise - Dallas
It was a beautiful day yesterday in Minneapolis. No humidity. Bright sun. 80 degrees. I went down Loring Park for Pride. Lots of people of all sizes, shapes, colors, ages and orientations.
Dallas is not supposed to quite as hot as last week but still in the upper 90's. I'm taking Friday off for the July 4th holiday.

Random thoughts
Speaking of sun. It was 101 degrees in Dallas when I left. That is just HOT. The weird thing was that I couldn't cool down after coming in doors. I would still be sweating several minutes later. It was like the sun was boiling my blood.
The chat boarding the plane at 5:30 was whether Michael Jackson was dead. People were using their web-enabled phones to try to get the news. Didn't really hear confirmation until we landed.
I finished my first USA Today crossword puzzle. The whole thing!
A really noticeable thing flying into Minneapolis are the trees. So many trees and so green. Dallas/North Texas does not have the trees.
Sorry for no car reviews. I've pretty much gone through all the models. The only new one was week before last. I had an Eclipse Spyder. A two door and a convertible! Fun but it was so hot couldn't always have the top down.
This week was a Chevy Malibu. Really nice looking car and nice to drive.

A piece o' cake
Today wasn't so bad for some reason. As many people said, the prep was worse than the actual endoscopy. The folks at Minnesota Gastro...blah blah were nice. It was the end of their day and I think they were a bit punchy.
The doctor gave me a clean bill of health. No polyps at all. Just a bit of hemorrhoids.
I'm glad it is over and happy to be eating again.
Back to Dallas early tomorrow morning. American has changed the schedule again. My usual 8:25am flight is no more. There is a 7:10 and a 9:?? something or other. I'm on the 7:10am.

Adopt-a-Highway clean up -- Big Big Thanks
Front row: Kathy, Rachel, Jackie, Rose, Amy
Back row: Christine, JT, Linda, James, Bunny
I cannot thank the "volunteers" enough for the first clean-up of Highway 10 mile markers 213 to 211 on Saturday, June 19. I received this is the section of Minnesota highway for my 50th birthday in January.
I was warned to make this blog entry not sound too bad for fear of losing volunteers for this Fall's clean-up but I'll be honest....it was tough.
We had a gorgeous, sunny day. It was hot! But the crew did an incredible effort and 2 miles each way is 4 miles overall and that is a lot of territory to pickup.
We were way too meticulous in the beginning trying to pickup all the cigarette butts. Lesson-learned...you cannot get the thousands of butts so leave 'em and concentrate on the bigger stuff.
We were filmed for the local NBC affiliate. Jeffrey Demars, the KARE-11 photo-journalist, is JT's son-in-law. He had been tipped off to this big news event back during the now historic Mexico trip. We were the featured story on the Saturday 10pm news. I can't find it on the station's website but if I do, I'll include link.
Nothing hazardous was found. Lots of car pieces and noticeable increase in trash on the side of road going away from the town of Elk River instead of going into Elk River.
We'll be looking for more volunteers this Fall and with some better planning and cooler weather, it should be a breeze.
Big incentive is the Dairy Queen at the start/finish. We also got tons of thanks from the locals and encouraging honks from passing vehicles.
Kathy found the story on Kare-11

Home - on time
Took the last flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Minneapolis. Minneapolis was under a tornado warning so I was not real confident about making it. The storms have held off and the flight left on time and got in early!
Could see lightening in the far distance after we landed and thunderstorm warnings are scrolling on the local tv stations.
Glad to be home. Back to Dallas next week on Tuesday. After doctor appointment on Monday for my first colonoscopy....yippee.

Vegas Quick Trip - Now in Dallas
They had troubles in Medford, Oregon and ended having Jill's dad fly them to Redding, California to catch a different flight to San Francisco then on to Vegas. For a time we didn't think they would make it on Sunday let alone in time for Bette Midler concert which we had tickets for.
They did actually make a flight but weren't going to be in time for our dinner reservation before the 7:30 show. When I landed in Vegas, I went to the hotel, dropped my luggage off with the bellman and headed over to Caesar's Palace to get the Bette Midler tickets and see if we could change our dinner reservations. It was a package deal with dinner at Bradley Ogden Restaurant and tickets to Bette Midler, the Showgirl Must Go On, show.
The box office manager was very very nice and walked me over to the restaurant to let the hostesses know that the three of us would be having dinner after the show instead of before.
I then had a couple of hours to kill before Jill and Alicia were to show up. I played some slots but was not doing well. I had my heavy backpack to lug around and wasn't really in the mood to play. I people watched and grabbed a bite to eat. Jill and Alicia arrived in good time and we decided they would go to hotel to check-in and cab it over to Caesar's. We were staying at the Luxor.
Bette Midler show was at 7:30 and we were to meet at the Collesium box office at 7pm. 7pm....no Jill and Alicia. 7:10pm....no Jill and Alicia. 7:20pm.... they arrive and we go in to sit down. The Colliseum is enormous. It seats almost 4,000 people. The stage is huge. The show was fantastic. Bette Midler did all the songs you would want and expect. And there was a full orchestra AND real Las Vegas showgirls along with Miss M's usual Harlettes.
I had been to a Bette Midler concert in Minneapolis a long time ago. She didn't disappoint then and she definitely didn't disappoint now.
We had a wonderful dinner at Bradly Ogden restaurant in Caesar's Palace. The waiter was very nice and brought candle with dessert.
Jill and Alicia didn't like the room at the Luxor they had checked in to so we changed rooms when we finally made it back to the hotel. That was after wandering through Caesar's Palace and the Bellagio which was next door. I think we made it to bed around 2 or 3am.
We slept in on Monday. Jill likes to play the slots and Alicia likes to shop. There is plenty of both in Vegas. We went to Mandalay Bay for brunch. There is a beautiful view of the Mandalay pools and the brunch buffet is really good. We went to the Luxor pool for a little bit. I was hoping to get a bit of a disco nap in but didn't really get any shut eye.
Monday night was the show at The Wynn hotel. It is a Cirque du Solei show...all the shows in Las Vegas are Cirque shows. The show is called La Reve which is French for The Dream. It is in, on and around water. Amazing is about the only word you can use to describe this extravaganza. The women are beautiful and the men are really beautiful. The acrobatics, the swimming, the costumes, the music, the special effects, it goes on and on. And they do it twice in a row....7pm and 9:30pm.
The Wynn is pretty but I still think the Bellagio is prettier. We had chatted with An 80 year old ex-boxer in the hotel cafe. He asked if I was a bodybuilder...which certainly did my ego all kinds of stroking.
A previous assistant stage manager, Emily, of Jill's met us after the show and took us to a tapas restaurant. Good food and good stories. She now is a stage manager on "O" -- another Cirque show which is at the Bellagio.
Emily dropped us off in front of the Bellagio so we could see the dancing waters. Was perfect timing. The Bellagio fountains are beautiful. We headed back to the Luxor stopping at New York New York to try the slots. It was very very smoky which is unusual. My eyes started to really bother me. I did good on a Wheel of Fortune slot and cashed out. Now good for me is getting back to the $20 I would put in. I actually made $15 on this Wheel of Fortune 5 cent slot. Jill wanted to go back to Mandalay Bay because she had done pretty good there.
I dropped $20 really fast and was not feeling the vibe. My eyes were now about falling out of my head. Alicia who was technically too young to be allowed within the gambling areas was fading. We dicided to head back to the Luxor and let Jill indulge in her obsession. I heard Jill when she got back to the room but had no idea what time it was. She later said it was 4am.
Tuesday. We kind of slept in again. We had to check-out by noon so we headed to the Luxor buffet to charge our meals to the room. The hotel was offering these deals where you could charge certain items to the room and then get a discount. The desk clerk said to just go to the buffet...charge it to the room...then call them to check out. It worked like a charm.
I wasn't really very hungry. We had checked our bags with the bellman before eating. After brunch we were to go over to the Bellagio to watch the Cirque Du Solei people try to break the Guinness World Record for people walking on stilts. Emily had learned how and was going to be part of the event. I kind of knew this but now really know this....Jill and Alicia will always stop for shopping. We were cutting it real close to the event start time but had to stop to shop. I admit since they stopped to shop, I took advantage to get one souvenir for Asha who had requested something.
We made to the Bellagio in time to see that we had missed it. By the time we got there it was over. The thing must not have been very long though there were lots and lots of people with various kinds of stilts. We didn't see Emily.
We went across Las Vegas Blvd which was renamed Cirque Du Solei Blvd in honor of Cirque's 25th anniversary to Planet Hollywood. Planet Hollywood is one of the newest casino-hotels on the strip. It was nice inside but I think it is probably more of a bar/club kind of place. We wandered down the strip. I bought post cards. Alicia was looking for clothing. We ended up
at MGM casino-hotel.
We saw the lions and their keepers. We played some slots. I did good at another Spin the Wheel. We talked Jill into playing Let It Ride which is an actual card game. She looked for her wallet and could not find it. We went back to the slots where she played and could not find it. Reported the wallet lost/stolen to security and headed back to get our luggage and get to the airport. Jill called her bank to cancel all the cards.
She had no picture identification so were concerned about her even getting home. We were able to get Jill and Alicia's luggage from the bellman using Alicia's id. Jill called her parents to have her dad pick them up at Meford airport. Jill's house and car keys were in her wallet. The hotel had said to go to seccond floor security at the airport to get clearance. Turns out she didn't have to. My flight was earlier so I headed to my gate after checking in.
Jill called a little while later to say they were checked it, at the gate and MGM had called and her wallet had been turned in. Good news to end a good birthday celebration.

Now for something different -- Vegas baby!
Today is Jill's birthday and she decided to celebrate it in Las Vegas. We are staying at the Luxor. That's the hotel shaped like a pyramid.
Going to Bette Midler concert at Caesar's tonight and La Reve at the Wynn tomorrow.
I then go to Dallas on Tuesday evening. Work Wednesday and Thursday in Dallas and home Thursday evening.
I managed to get the lawn mowed yesterday. Had gotten up early to meet Kevin, Molly, Casey and Andy to go play some freesbie golf before they headed on to Wisconsin.

Getting home??? 7:57pm CDT
I don't know how but I got home.
I was stand by on the 2:45pm flight. I didn't have much hope I thought. 2:45 soon turned into 3:20. Then 3:45. I was #10 out of 48. Some folks' names were actually on the cleared list so there were stand by people making it on.
They appeared to close the flight but the gate attendant was still working the computer. Miraculously he called my name. I went up and he asked if an upgrade was okay. Sure was. I was in the row 6.
I think I was the last one on the plane. I got settled in and then saw the pilots make a beeline for the door. Lead flight attendant announced that the plane we were on was just assigned to Austin, TX and our plane was now at another gate. Another gate in another terminal!
Everybody got off the plane and headed to the terminal C.
I had called Kevin, my nephew, to let him know I as actually going to make it home by around 6pm. He told me he thought they were having car trouble.
When I called Kevin back to let him know I was delayed, he told me they were, too. Their mini-van had broken down and they were on the side of I-90 in Minnesota. They had called their car care service.
Meanwhile, all the passengers, pilots and flight attendants headed to the other plane. Departure time was now set for 4:30.
We did take off on time and land some 2 hours later. I called Kevin. They were back on the road and had another hour or so to go.
Kevin just called. They are close and are going straight to hotel. I'll meet them down there and if we all aren't too exhausted, we'll get a bite to eat.
1:41PM
Decided to try my luck at standing by.
Except didn't even try the earliest flight. The 12:50 flight didn't leave until 1:30. Was on stand by list of 50...yes....5 - 0 ... other people. Because of my status I was at least propelled to the 15th spot.
Not one person on stand by got on the flight.
I'm now rolled over to the 2:45pm flight.
Stay tuned.

Stranded in Dallas
Because of all the bad weather, virtually all the flights into and out of Dallas have been canceled. And at least all the flights to Minneapolis are canceled.
I needed to get home because my nephew Kevin, his wife and two sons are coming to my house tomorrow.
Anyone want to entertain them? The only flight I was able to get was tomorrow night at 8:40pm getting in around midnight!

Severe weather including tornado - update
We were there for over 45 minutes. No tornado near us turned out.
That was 7pm. It is now almost midnight and another set of storms coming through Dallas. No tornado warnings with this one but lots of lightening and thunder.
Thursday morning update: Storms continued through the night. Woke up at 3am because of lightening. I got up at 5am with another storm roaring. I decided to iron my shirt and then the lights went out. The entire hotel complex lost power.
Power came back on about 5 minutes later. I walked over to the gym. The sky was actually clear over the hotel but lightening flashing every which way.
It is now 9am and another storm is rolling through. Doesn't bode to well for an on-time departure.

Hot Dallas - Updated: watch what you wish for
It is down right cold here in Minnesota. Rain Saturday. Cold Sunday but no rain. Rain last night. Cold this morning.
update: 2pm
Went from the mid-4o's this morning in Minneapolis to mid-80's in Dallas when I landed. And it is humid....not in a good way.

Ahh, home
We went shakily to the gate.
Earthquakes and big boss lady
There was an earthquake this week just southwest of Fort Worth. It was too small to be felt where I am in Irving. But there have been 4 earthquakes in the region is less than a year.
I've always wanted to experience a small earthquake. I may get my chance if this keeps up.
Our boss's boss's boss lady was here this week. She flew in last night and hosted a dinner for the team. We went to the swanky restaurant at the top of the hotel I normally stay at, Nana.
I wasn't actually staying at the Hotel Anatole this week because it was sold out for a convention. I was still able to use the gym because I know all the people who work there.

Hot Dallas
Back in Dallas and it is hot here. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise. At least it isn't too humid yet this week.
Here is another pic from Tall Boy's Fan Club highway adoption. The first trash.
Linda, we have to go to the Plants and Things USA shop on Highway 10 in Anoka. An amazing place of everything to put up, sit on, stick in the ground, put water in/on/over in your garden that you can imagine.
Oh, competition update. I came 8 of 11. I was robbed!
Tall Boy's Fan Club
Checked out the location of our 2 miles of highway. It is in Elk River. Actually kind of in town or may be starts right at the edge of town. One good thing is that it has already been mowed.
