After walking a few hours in the heat and humidity...with a backpack restricting circulation to your arms and hands...do not use the meaty part of your thumb as a drum pad and an empty plastic water bottle as a drum stick.
It may be a little subtle in this picture but my thumb is all black and blue and very sore.
